SUMMARY:
In an attempt to help support the overthrow of the current leader, the United States has reportedly been sending more and more spies to Syria. Their goal: train the Syrian rebels to better their military organization and speed up the overthrow.
According to reports, the spies come from the “CIA and other agencies.” Most likely, the spies come from the National Clandestine Service branch of the CIA, their job being to “strengthen national security and foreign policy objective through the clandestine collection of human intelligence and covert action.”
No sources have been named, nor has the occurrence been further elaborated on.
IMPACT:
Syria is the country that will be most impacted by the CIA’s involvement. Two paths could be taken, each one just as influential as the next. The first thing that could happen would be a successful coup, or overthrow of the government, which would obviously have a huge impact on the country. On the other hand, the coup could be unsuccessful, not only not overthrowing the government but also endangering the lives of many innocent civilians. Either way, the Syrian citizens will be better able to fight against their government in coming years.
OPINION:
I actually think this is a great idea. What better way to overthrow an authoritarian ruler than to have their troops trained by the United States? While this may not be the best way to do it, going over there and getting involved, something should be done about the government. If the citizens aren’t happy, they deserve better. If they want more rights and a better lifestyle, who’s to say they shouldn’t have it?
