SUMMARY:
The FBI has announced plans for a new program to help them better identify criminals on the run. The Next Generation Identification, or NGI, is a $1 billion program based on biometrics, aimed at finding new way to help identify criminals. The project includes an improved fingerprint identification service, better face recognition, iris scanning, DNA analysis, voice identification, and latent finger and palm prints. In addition, visuals of tattoos, scars, and other physical marks will be kept.
The project is expected to be completed and implemented by 2014.
IMPACT:
There are a few main groups of people that this program will impact. The first will obviously be the FBI. They will now be able to better identify criminals and others on the run and the program will hopefully also help to protect American citizens. In addition, the criminals themselves will be impacted, due to the fact that their chances of getting caught will increase. The final group of people impacted will be the American citizens because, as mentioned before, they will be better protected.
OPINION:
Personally, I think this is a great idea. The FBI has long been in need of something to help increase the security and their effectiveness (not that they aren’t effective already) and this has the potential to be that thing. My only problems with the program are the one billion dollar cost (although if it is successful, it’s worth it) and the fact that5 it is not expected to be implemented for another two years. While I understand why it will take such a long time, it would still be nice to have it a little sooner.
