SUMMARY:
Tony Mack, the mayor of Trenton, New Jersey, and more than six others have been arrested in what the FBI believes to be a corruption scandal. Mack and his administration have had a tough run since his first day in office, continuously facing crisis after crisis. Since he was elected, he has gone through many administrators, who have resigned for multiple reasons, including accusing the mayor of not believing in “good government,” one pleading guilty to embezzlement, one convicted of theft, one arrested for buying heroine, and one arrested on charges of stealing. According to one source, the mayor let her go in an attempt to give jobs to his closest friends. Those arrested are expected to appear in federal court but are currently released on bonds around $150,000.
IMPACT:
While I’d like to think that Mack and his administration will be gravely impacted, the sad truth is that they probably won’t be. More than likely, once the trial comes around, my theory is that those involved may get a few years, may have to pay a good sum of money but ultimately will not punished too harshly. The worst thing they may get is some disgrace, lose their job, maybe have to actually do work like normal Americans. In the long run, however, nothing much will happen. The major impact will simply be on the town who has to now elect a new mayor.
OPINION:
Once again, I am struck by just how corrupt our government is. While we brag about the transparency within, it’s everything under the surface that people don’t often see. Mack’s administration has had so many problems, it’s a miracle this hasn’t been uncovered sooner. This is basically just a repeat of Jackson’s spoil system, something that was frowned upon back in early 1800’s and should be even more frowned upon now a days. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seems that this particular event has gotten very much publicity and will probably just be brushed under the rug and forgotten about.
